The towns of Marfa, Alpine, and Marathon embody the far west Texas spirit of wide open possibility. If you react like locals to the almost endless spread of landscape, you'll be on the next plane to El Paso. For some backstory on the assignment and my three trips out west, watch the audio slideshow.

Thank you for the great piece on Marfa, but shhhh....I wanted to keep it my secret! My twin sons and I went there on our Great Road Trip a couple of years ago (they were 24) and it was an unforgettable experience. There's nothing like being in this beautiful, quiet, wide-open space to connect with those you care about. Marfa rules! We plan to return for a longer visit when we can all get together.

I could listen to Taylor Bruce's voice all day long. A lovely complement to the magazine article. Thank you, Taylor for "getting" this area. You are so eloquent and did a wonderful job describing the 3 towns. It is about the landscape. Thanks you, SL.

Nice work, Taylor. Thanks for the slide show. Both the landscape and the people are extraordinary. (But in that one photo... it's unsafe for Mary Baxter to paint on the railroad tracks!)
