1. Joe T. Garcia's Mexican Dishes

Stop in for lunch at Joe T. Garcia's Mexican Dishes. Order the chicken-fajitas ($8.50, cash or checks only), and soak up the lively, Old Mexico, cantina-esque atmosphere for which this local institution is known. Scan the many framed autographed photos of celebrities who've eaten here, such as Tiger Woods, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Bette Midler.
Open for lunch and dinner daily. Find on map.

2. Curly's Frozen Custard

Pull into Curly's Frozen Custard for a little something sweet (cones or cups, $1.50-$4) and sit right outside at a picnic table. Find on map.

3. Hot Damn, Tamales!

Squeeze into the tiny dining area that only seats 15 people, and order the tamale plate ($7), which comes with a choice of three kinds of tamales, rice, beans, chips, and salsa. Owner Ione Stavron makes 11 different varieties that lift humble tamales to new heights of flavor. The most popular kinds are beef tenderloin, beer-and-jalapeño, and a vegetarian wild-mushroom-and-Texas-goat-cheese concoction.
Open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday. Find on map.

4. Hunter Brothers' H3 Ranch

Rise for a straightforward flapjack breakfast ($6.25) at Hunter Brothers' H3 Ranch. Open for lunch and dinner daily and breakfast weekends. Find on map.

5. Corner Bakery Cafe

Try Corner Bakery Cafe for good pastries and eggs. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily. Find on map.

And if you're in Fort Worth this weekend...

Check out the Hidden Gardens of Fort Worth Tour, sponsored by the Fort Worth Historical Society. The tour includes six gardens in the Crestwood neighborhood and tickets cost $15.00 in advance or $20.00 on the day of the tour.
