We are located on the South end of Maysville, just off of US68. Maysville can be either the beginning or the end of the Trail, depending on which end of Kentucky you start your shopping. Please stop and see us. You'll be glad you did!!

Hey Marsha,

Thanks for dropping a comment and letting us know about Keepsake Treasures. I went ahead and added it to the map (it's the yellow shopping bag icon near the northeast corner), and you can zoom in for more details.

Good luck this upcoming weekend.

We are from St. Louis and are traveling this year's 400 Mile Sale from Bowling Green to Cadiz. We saw a bunch of people setting up along the route when we came through yesterday and two huge cattle trucks loaded with furniture passed us heading west to set up. Not sure where they ended up but we will find out today.

Posted by:Bill and Sally House | June 05, 2008 at 05:09 AM

There is a HUGE YARD SALE on the north end of Paris in which an Antique Dealer has cleared out their entire warehouse and has brought in 10 truckloads of antiques, furniture and stuff! Whatever does not sell on Sunday will be auctioned off. And just up the road in Millersburg there is a large Yard Sale and Alice's Concrete's this year has 25 different groups set up on her property selling lots of furniture and much much more! You got to see it to believe it. I am staying at Blue Lick Battlefield State Park and it looks like they have a lot of people setting up there as well. Can't wait to check it out this morning!

During the 400 Mile Sale, if you happen to end up in Paris KY on one of these evenings, I would definitely dine at Migdalia's Restaurant. It is a five star restaurant in the middle of a small town and it is absolutely delicious! We were in shorts, ball caps and tennis shoes last night when we stopped by for dinner but they still welcomed us. You will love it. Today we are headed up to Old Washington to start the 400 Mile Sale at the beginning and work our way across Kentucky. But we do plan to make it back to Paris in time for an early supper. I hear Varden's Cafe and Emporium is absolutely wonderful but they are only open from 7 am until 6 pm so we will have to make a fast track to cover all that ground in one day and get there in time before it closes.

I am starting in Lexington and am looking for the old fashioned play pens for infants. I need two of them and am wondering if anyone has seen them in their travels? Thank you so much! I know this will be like looking for a needle in a haystack but... : )

Matt - This may be more than you want but I have been sending e-mails to folks each day that inquired about the sale. Thought it would be so much easier if I sent it through you and had them look on line. Hope you don't mind.

DAY ONE OF THE SALE:
We started at Old Washington at the eastern end of the 400 Mile Sale at 8:00 am only to find the shops not opening until 8:30. But Mayslick was open for business and we saw that he had 30 push mowers (the old kind that don't require gas). Last year he had over 60 rocking horses for sale of which he sold over 30. It was quite a site to see all these trucks and cars with these wobbly horses in the back. Hope he has as good a luck with his mowers.

Due to heavy storms the night before, people were just setting up but the great news is, there were LOTS of yard sales setting up along the entire way. Hot spots along the way were definitely the Ya Ya Shoppe near Fairview, Allison's Concrete where there were probably 25 vendors and even Millersburg was hopping with one huge yard sale just as one leaves town and the local antique shop owner said she had quite a few shoppers come through and all seemed to be buying.

Blue Lick State Park decided this year to bring their vendors right out onto Hwy 68 and they had a great set up directly across from the Park with over 20 vendors setting up selling everything from walking sticks and tools to furniture. Paris was hopping with lots of people stopping at the Tobacco Warehouse and at the car lot across the street where a shop owner had cleared out her entire warehouse of antiques and had everything for sale for bargain prices. Lots of furniture but also boxes and boxes of "stuff". She is selling everything!!! And whatever doesn't sell by Sunday, she has an auctioneer coming in to sell the rest. Her plans is to bring nothing back so she can start over and start collecting "stuff" for next year's sale!

And if you haven't been to Paris, you really must stop by. But be sure you go on Main Street and not take the bypass because you will miss some real treasures! The antique shops (and there are many) are offering wonderful sales. There are lots of sidewalk sales taking place and the restaurants there are wonderful! We had lunch at Varden's Cafe and Emporium. Boy was it delicious!

We then headed south through Lexington. There is no yard sales set up in Lexington. Too much traffic along Hwy 68 makes stopping nearly impossible. Wilmore was our next stop and boy was it worth the drive. Nearly 20 vendors are set up at Ichthus Grounds which is a huge open area with plenty of parking, rest room facilities and ice cold water. This is a site you do not want to miss. We must have spent two hours there and did not see it all. We also bought two wet vac and a drill that works great all for $15. There is something for everyone here. Lots of tools, golf clubs, furniture, jewelry, glassware, books, and so much more.

Our next stop was Harrodsburg which is always a pleasure to visit. Both sides of the road as you enter downtown offers lots of antique furniture, clothes, novelty items and collectibles under the shade of huge trees. With the strong breeze coming through, it was nice and cool to shop and I found quite a few treasures I could not live without.

In Perryville, I bought some Kentucky made jams and salsa and enjoyed exploring this historic town so rich in Civil War history. Friday, a gentleman will be cooking up some delicious barbecue! Missed him this year. Will have to plan better next year to be in Perryville Friday or Saturday when he is cooking. It is a meal you do not want to miss. Another worthwhile place to stop is just outside of Perryville as one heads towards Gravel Switch. One of the yard sales set up on the right makes some awesome brisket. In fact, it is sooooo good that one lady drove 300 miles last year just to have some of it only to find out they had cooked something else last year. But they assured her if she would come back this year, they would do brisket again and so they have.

By the time we came through Gravel Switch, it was nearly 7:00 and most of the yard sales had shut down for the evening. We spent the night in Lebanon and are about to take in all of their yard sales (and there are a lot of them) before heading towards Bowling Green which is our goal today.

I do know that there are over 75 vendors set up between Cadiz and Bowling Green and more planning to open today. And that the section between Bowling Green and Edmonton has tons of yard sales you do not want to miss. Will check out Campbellsville and Greensburg today and let you know what I find.

And if you are traveling the 400 Mile, you might want to go online and visit the Southern Living Magazine website and tell about what treasures you have found. Either go to http://www.400mile.com/ and scroll down to the section on Southern Living or go to http://talesfromtheroad.southernliving.com/tales_from_the_road/2008/05/400-miles-of-sh.html
And do check out what others are saying about the sale.

We have met people from Ontario, California, Michigan, West Virginia, Ohio, Missouri and Wisconsin thus far in our travels, all here to shop the 400 Mile Sale. One couple flew in from Chicago, rented a car and are traveling the entire route. They plan to move to Kentucky and thought what better way to see what the state has to offer and to meet some of the folks along the way than by taking Hwy 68 during the 400 Mile Sale. They have not been disappointed. They love the people and the breathtaking countryside and are even more sold on moving to Kentucky.

Can't wait to see who we run into today and what treasures we will find.

DAY 2 OF THE SALE:
Another Great Day Shopping! We made it from Lebanon to Bowling Green...barely! In fact, we had to pass up quite a few great yard sales this year to make it that far because there were just too many! Lebanon did an excellent job! Mary's Place had a number of vendors but there were LOTS of yard sales on both sides of Lebanon. And Campbellsville and Greensburg also were very impressive. Not so many in downtown but quite a few great ones on either side of the towns.

We drove from Greensburg to Edmonton and it took us three hours. My driving partner was starving! We stopped at a great place! Somewhere between Greensburg and Exie on our way to Edmonton there is a white building on the left side of the road that says "Deli" and then in small letters on the window it says "Snackin Shack". If you see the building, stop! They have delicious food. Only been open 8 months and working on some remodeling but they have the most delicious shrimp and hot apple pies. And I loved their sweet tea, deviled eggs and green beans. Great food and well worth the stop!

But the best question is.....ARE PEOPLE BUYING??????

Just before reaching Exie Fire Department we stopped at a small yard sale who had opened Thursday and had already sold $1600 worth of merchandise by Friday at noon. They had about wiped her out and she was now down to a bunch of clothes, knick knacks and a few pieces of furniture.

Sad Story with a Happy Ending! Met a lady that thanked us greatly for holding the sale this week. She and her family had lost their home the week before in a fire. She was now shopping the 400 Mile Sale to replace all that she had lost including all her children's clothes and toys. The person manning the yard sale turned to her and asked what size her children wore and she said 4T and 10. Ends up the person had a bunch of size 10 clothes and offered all they had to the woman for free. Made my heart smile. That is what this is all about!

I have met people from Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Illinois, Wisconsin, Nevada and Indiana. There are two different groups from Canada and there is a couple from Chicago Illinois who have decided they want to get out of the city and move to Kentucky. Figured out what better way to decide what part of Kentucky to live than by taking the 400 Mile Sale which would give them an opportunity to actually meet people from each of the communities.

I have also met a man who is 84 and had a van and was buying quite a bunch. And I would LOVE for someone to take a picture of the couple on the motorcycle. You can't miss them. They are in their 80's and as cute as can be. They are pulling a trailer and having the time of their life.

Once again, Barren County outdid themselves. Lots of yard sales on both sides of Glasgow. And before you get to Glasgow, you must stop at 68-80 Market. Looks a bit like a gas station but it has the best biscuits and ham and I hear their hamburgers are delicious! Another must stop on our dining list.

And I loved stopping in at the County Line of Warren and Barren Counties. They have a bunch of vendors with some great stuff!
Headed west from Bowling Green today. Hear there are Lots and Lots of yard sales near Rockfield, Auburn and Elkton. Plans are to make it to Cadiz tonight. Wish me luck!

REPORT FROM OLD WASHINGTON from Marsha, Owner of Keepsake Treasures...
Yesterday was a good day. I ended up having over 60 people (which is good for us on a Thursday), and sold over $200 both inside the shop and outside. That was good for 1 day! It's 11:00am now, and have only had 8 people. Getting off to a slower start today (Friday). I'm sure the VERY HOT weather will slow people down. One of our shopkeepers who lives in Mt. Olivet said there are alot more yard sales on 68 today, as she was coming in to work. How were the crowds around Paris? I wish Old Washington was right on 68. That would make a huge difference for us. some people take the time to turn in here, and others just head on down the road. We had people yesterday from Michigan, North Carolina, and Ohio, as well as towns in Kentucky.

Dear V,
I saw two old fashioned wood play pens between Lebanon and Glasgow. Someone in Greensburg was looking for wood high chairs. I saw a couple of them between Greensburg and Edmonton near the community of Exie.

Hey J. Gallimore,

I tried adding "Belews" to the map, in case people wanted to zoom in on around Aurora and find it, but it didn't come up in Google Maps. So instead a put a place marker near Aurora and labeled it Belews, but I'm not sure it's all that close to the actual restaurant.

Could you zoom in on the map and let me know? (If they really are the best burgers and shakes anywhere, we want people to be able to find it so they can judge for themselves!)

Thanks!

Posted by:Matt | June 07, 2008 at 09:04 AM

Saturday morning I started out from Bowling Green and headed west towards Cadiz which was my goal for the day. I never made it. There were too many sales! It took me from 8:00 until 2:30 to make it as far as Russellville and I skipped the HUGE sale at Rockfield School and all the yard sales at Stone Crest Subdivision. There must have been over 50 yard sales just between those two locations. It would have taken me five hours just to cover those two sites.

Halfway between Rockfield and Aurora, there was a great yard sale up a hill on the right that had everything from tools to antiques to primitives and so much more! They also had pulled pork sandwiches and strawberry short cakes. Delicious!

This 400 Mile Sale is different from the 127 Sale in that we really try our best to group yard sales together and not have them spread out every mile. For one thing it tends to be much safer because at each of the areas we try to encourage yard sales to set up where there are parking areas so people do not have to park on the side of the road. And, although its impressive when one drives down the road and sees a yard sale every mile, getting out of ones car 50 million times gets tiring. It is so nice to be able to park, shop 5 or 10 yard sales at one time then load back in the car and drive for a little while in air conditioning before coming to the next group of yard sales. One needs a little time in between sales to recover.

There is a large group of yard sales set up as one turns on Old 68 heading into Aurora from the east who said altogether they sold nearly $2000 in merchandise Thursday and Friday and that Saturday was shaping up to be a good day as well. And the other end of Aurora did very well too with one multi-family yard sale selling nearly as much (they had a ton of "stuff" and some nice furniture as well). And those who set up around the Red Barn Antiques did quite well as did Red Barn who offered both air conditioning and restroom facilities, two items we could have used more of along the way. Aurora was also hosting their annual Tractor Parade and historic motors display down at the Fairgrounds. I can assure you, Nan's restaurant and the other restaurants in town were really staying busy. And if you haven't eaten at Nan's yet, you really should drop by some time. Good country cookin'.

The stretch between Russellville and Cadiz tends to have fewer yard sales but the yard sales you'll find tend to be large in size. There was a great one on the right which was under a shade of trees and, with the breeze, made for pleasurable shopping. There were multiple families set up together who, between Thursday and Friday, sold over $2,700 worth of merchandise at this one site! And it looked like Saturday would be another $1,000 sale day. Amazing! We also stopped at another yard sale in which Coy from Allensville was cooking up some barbecue ribs and chicken. It smelled soooooo good!

The entire City of Elkton gets into the 400 Mile Sale but they are not all located on Hwy 68. When one gets in town, pick up a map which shows where each are located throughout the city. There were tons of them if one took the time to look. Just past Elkton is the historic town of Fairview which had a number of really good yard sales last year. This year shoppers were a bit challenged to get to those sales on Friday and Saturday due to the bicentennial celebration of Jefferson Davis in which the roads were shut off to Fairview due to a large Civil War reenactment taking place and other activities such as living history and more. Next year, we will try to move those sales outside of Fairview if possible and work more with those planning the celebration to encourage shoppers to take the time to partake in the event. I hear it was absolutely wonderful and one can not shop all the time. At least I can't.

Another great place to find some great items is the big hill on your left just before coming into Hopkinsville. They do very well at this site and are quite visible from the road. And if you missed the Senior Citizen center in downtown Hopkinsville, you missed a lot. It was filled to the brim.

Well shoppers. This was as far as I made it on Saturday. I had every intent to make it to Cadiz because all their antique shops were offering special discounts and sidewalk sales but there were just too many sales this year! By 4:00, I was exhausted and literally had "shopped til I dropped". We headed back home but made three important stops along the way. One was to purchase a table that I had seen but not bought promising that if it was still there when I came back through I would buy it. And buy it I did. We also stopped at the yard sale in which Coy was barbecuing and picked up a huge rack of barbecue ribs, a whole chicken and ears of grilled corn and took them home for dinner. (You did not expect me to cook after a full day of shopping. It just wasn't happening). The meat melted in one's mouth. If you are out and about on Sunday between Elkton and Russellville, you really need to stop by and pick you up some BBQ!

In this section of the state, I met people from Pennsylvania, Georgia, Ohio, Illinois and lots of people from all over Kentucky, many of whom had never been this far west and were amazed by the beauty of the landscape with rolling hills and agriculture fields filled with wheat and other crops.

What to expect on Sunday....Great bargains! Many of the yard sales may not open until after church and other won't open at all. But those that do often offer the best prices, preferring to sell what they have left to avoid having to load it all back up.
