No, it’s not a pile up, it’s art, my friend. Titled Dance, the 12-car choreographic sculpture is one of 20-plus works that together comprise Season Four of Sarasota Season of Sculpture. Mostly located in or adjacent to the city’s Bayfront Park, the works grace the waterfront until May 26, 2008.

Comprehension

Season of Sculpture has generated more than discussion over the years, even a little controversy, but it does serve to get people talking about art…or what some think it isn’t. The sculpture titled Comprehension tackles the subject head on, as two sculpted figures seem to mull over the topic as it relates to what seems to be a giant tooth.

Louis Armstrong

Overall, the collection definitely leans toward the modern, but not everything involves subjects as left-of-center as teeth and automobiles. One such sculpture, located at the John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art – this is the only work not at Bayfront – pays homage to musical genius Louis Armstrong.

Are those Pontiacs?

I think most of them are. It reminded me of an old Sesame Street cartoon that shows cars moving along a crowded city street until the Walk/ Don't Walk signs start flashing "Walk." Being law-abiding autos, all the cars bolt up on their rear tires and start waddling down the street.
